PORTER TOWNSHIP — An Elkhart man was killed Friday in a Porter Township crash, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Richard J. Behnke reported that at approximately 10:26 p.m Friday, his office was called to investigate a personal injury crash that occurred on Sunset Boulevard near S. Beechwood Street in Porter Township.

Initial investigation shows that Travis lee Schlabach, 39, Resident of Elkhart, was driving southbound on Sunset Boulevard when the he lost control of his vehicle, causing it to run off the roadway and crash into a tree. Schlabach succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.

Speed appears to be a factor in the crash, and a seat belt was not worn, according to deputies.

This crash remains under investigation.

Assisting agencies include Michigan State Police, Elkhart City Police, Porter Township Ambulance and Porter Township Fire Department.
