NILES - Downtown Niles is looking more festive by the day. On Wednesday, a new holiday tree was planted at the corner of Second and Main streets.
Croteau said in the future an irrigation system and electricity should be placed underground to water and light the tree.
In the coming weeks, events will be taking place around town to help get Niles further into the holiday spirit.
Community members can come and help decorate downtown Niles, on Sunday, Nov. 27, from 1 to 3 p.m.
Saturday Dec. 3, is the Holiday Homecoming event in downtown Niles.
The day starts out with a breakfast at the Golden Nugget Saloon, which is located at 202 E. Main St., from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Rudolph and friends will be in attendance.
Those who wish to shop till they drop can do so on Dec. 3, as many of the downtown merchants will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The co-op Santa Shop will be open at 127 E. Main St. with gifts and Santa Claus himself will be at 207 N. Second Street, from noon to 2 p.m.
Santa Claus will also be visiting Niles every Thursday till Christmas, Dec. 8, 15 and 22, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the same locations. Pictures will be available for $3.
Celebrate the lighting of the Niles Train Depot with the Four Flags Garden Club from 4 to 6 p.m. and then downtown Niles will be lit with holiday spirit at 6:30 p.m.
Finally head to downtown Niles to see what the merchants have to offer and get free transportation around the district.
Each Friday from now until Christmas residents can come to the downtown trolley hop Fridays on Dec. 2, 9 and 16 from 7 to 9 p.m.
People can park in any of the city lots and the free trolley will pick shoppers up at several downtown street corners.
