NILES — Saturday at the Four Flags Apple Festival, competitors entered baking desserts in the categories of cakes, pastries and pies — all using apples. Judges then samples the desserts and awarded winners:

• Gloria Linde, first-place winner for her four-layer dessert; Linda Lietz, second-place winner for her apple donuts and Betty Timmreck, third-place winner for her Victorian apple squares.

• Christopher Archer, third-place winner for his caramel apple cake; Betty Timmreck, second-place winner for her harvest apple cake and Lori Carberry, first-place winner for her apple caramel mousse cake.

•  Charlton McCully, second-place winner for his apple apple pie; Joyel Timmreck, first-place winner for her apple caramel pie and Lori Carberry, third-place winner for her Dutch apple pie.
