VICKSBURG — The Dowagiac golf team has been knocking on the door at the Wolverine Conference jamborees this season.
On Monday, the Chieftains kicked in the door and picked up its first jamboree victory of the season.
Dowagiac has been pretty consistent this season as it usually finishes in the top three.
The Chieftains needed all of its players to put it together on the same day, which is what they did at States Golf Course in Vicksburg.
Dowagiac shot 191 to edge Wolverine Conference leader Sturgis, which shot 192.
Plainwell, which entered the jamboree in second place in the overall standings, finished sixth, allowing the Chieftains to move into the runner-up spot.
The Trojans are going to win the conference championship, so the real chase is for second place.
Dowagiac is now three points ahead of the Trojans (48-45). Three Rivers is fourth with 38 points and Otsego fifth with 34.
States is a long course with four par fives. The nine-hole par 38 is also the highest among the course the league plays this season.
“So, our best score of the year came on the course with the highest score for par,” said Dowagiac coach Bob Turner. “That was pretty cool.”
The Chieftains were led by Rebecca Franklin, who earned medalist honors after shooting a one-over par 39.
Dowagiac also got 46 from Greta Whitaker and a 47 from Lyndsie Stolpe, both of whom finished in the top 10 Monday.
Calley Ruff and Peytin Lee shot 59 and 75 respectively for the Chieftains.
Dowagiac participated in the Sturgis Invitational at Island Hills Golf Course in Centreville on Tuesday.
The Wolverine Conference will wrap up its season with its tournament at Indian Lake Hills Golf Course in Eau Claire Oct. 4.
