CASSOPOLIS — One Cass County facility has been ranked among the top in the state.

The Cass County Medical Care Facility presented its annual report to the Cass County Board of Commissioners during the board’s regular meeting Thursday evening. The report contained informational material about what the facility does, and also revealed that the facility was ranked as a top nursing home in the state of Michigan in 2018.

Interim Director Christian Lutes presented the report to the board of commissioners. He began by explaining what the Cass County Medical Care Facility is and how it benefits seniors in Cass County and beyond.

Cass County Medical Care Facility is a government-run nursing home, located at 23770 Hospital St., Cassopolis. The facility participates in the Medicare and Medicaid programs and provides resident counseling services.

“We are a county facility governed by the county of Cass,” Lutes said. “Not only do we provide housing for the rest of people’s lives should they need it, but we also rehabilitate people back home, so they can resume their lives.”

When Lutes made this announcement, adding that the facility had also received a five-star rating by medicare.gov, commissioners burst into applause.

“It’s amazing that we could get a five-star rating in our tiny little county,” Lutes said.

Lutes also reported that the facility was at 94 percent occupancy for 2018 and was operating under budget, which he said the facility was happy about.

“That gets harder and harder to do every year, when you have to make do with what you have,” he said.

Going forward, Lutes said the facility hopes to continue to serve the aging population of Cass County and to be more involved in the community.

“We are looking to be an active community member and taking a more active role within our community because of our population, which is all of our relatives — our aunts, our uncles, our mothers and fathers,” he said. “We need to be seen and need to be heard. … We want to serve our population.”

Lutes also encouraged anyone to visit the Cass County Medical Care Facility to see what they do and how they operate.

“Come out and see us and see your tax dollars at work,” he said.
