Wilson goal lifts Chieftains past Tigers

DOWAGIAC — Visiting Dowagiac made an early goal stand up in a 1-0 Wolverine Conference soccer victory over Allegan Wednesday night.

The Chieftains’ Cristian Wilson scored in the 11th minute off an assist by John Hassle.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net the remaining 69 minutes as Dowagiac improved to 11-3-1 overall and 3-0 in conference matches.

The Chieftains are now unbeaten in its last eight matches.

“We played a well-rounded competitive 80 minutes and came out with a really good win,” said Dowagiac coach Mike Williams. “Allegan is a tough team and we will continue to see teams the rest of the year of that caliber. We need to continue to play that hard throughout the conference schedule to get wins.”

The Chieftains outshot Allegan 18-9 in the match. Dowagiac keeper Victor Zavala was credited with the shutout.

Dowagiac will host Edwardsburg in a Wolverine Conference match at 5:30 p.m. Monday.

The Eddies are currently 0-1-2 in league matches and 4-5-2 overall.

District soccer draw

The Division 3 district tournament draw, which will be hosted by Berrien Springs, was released Thursday morning.

Dowagiac will travel to Coloma for a 5 p.m. match on Oct. 15, while Brandywine will host Schoolcraft at 5 p.m.

The Dowagiac-Coloma winner will advance to the Oct. 17 semifinals against the winner of the Berrien Springs-Benton Harbor Countryside match, which will be played at 5 p.m. Oct. 15.

The Brandywine-Schoolcraft winner will face the winner of the Buchanan-Constantine match on Oct.17.

The Bucks host the Falcons at 5 p.m. Oct. 15.

The Division 3 championship match is scheduled for 11 a.m. Oct. 20 in Berrien Springs.
