CASSOPOLIS — The biggest test of the season awaits the Cassopolis football team Friday night.

Muskegon Catholic Central will travel to William F. Scott Field to take on the undefeated Rangers in a non-conference clash.

The Crusaders are 2-2 entering the midway point of the 2018 season after defeating Algonac (35-7) and Ludington (34-6). Catholic Central was defeated by Pontiac Notre Dame 21-7 in Week 2 and by Muskegon Orchard View 32-14 in Week 3.

The Rangers (4-0) have been the class of the Southwest 10 Conference so far this season having outscored their opponents 228-18.

The closest game for Cassopolis was two weeks ago when the Rangers got past White Pigeon 28-12.

The Crusaders rebounded from their loss to Orchard View by defeating Ludington last Friday night.

Catholic Central was led by Salomon Waller’s 150 yards rushing on 15 carries, while Dawson Steigman rushed for 96 yards on 12 carries.

Crusader quarterback Max Price was 7-of-12 with a pair of touchdowns and an interception. Christian Gordon caught three of those passes for 47 yards and a score.

Defensively, Catholic Central is led by Meshawn Crowley, who had 11 tackles against Ludington. Bailey Ward, Aidan Cook and Josh Holden all finished with six tackles.

Veteran Cassopolis coach Dan Purlee is looking forward to the challenge.

“The kids are excited for the opportunity to compete against MCC,” he said. “I feel our preparation and work ethic the entire season has put us in a position to be competitive against all our opponents.”

Even though facing the Crusaders would be similar to an opponent in the postseason, Purlee, his staff and his team are treating Friday night’s contest just like any other game.

“We’ve emphasized how strong of an opponent MCC is, but will treat it the way we do all of our games,” Purlee said.

Cassopolis tuned up for the contest by thumping host Bloomingdale 82-6 in a Southwest 10 Conference game last week.

A 40-point opening quarter kept the Rangers undefeated.

Cassopolis opened the scoring with a pair of fumble returns for touchdowns.

Hunter Parsons and Ahsan Hart picked up the fumbles to give the Rangers a 16-0 lead after the two-point conversions were successful.

Also scoring in the opening quarter were Tyrese Hunt-Thompson on an 80-punt return, Parsons on a 52-yard interception return and a Dylan Green to Ky’ante Buck pass good for 40 yards.

The Rangers tacked on 21 points in the second quarter to take a 61-0 lead into the locker room. The second half was played under a running clock.

Cassopolis picked up another defensive touchdown on an Ahsan Hart 28-yard fumble return.

Darrion Gatson and J.J. Hart scored on runs of 71 and 20 yards.

In the third quarter, Hunt-Thompson returned the opening kickoff 82 yards, while Owen Gardner scored on a 60-yard run to end the third quarter and Mason Polomcak capped the scoring with a 28-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Kickoff for the game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
