EDWARDSBURG — Edwardsburg High School graduate Barbara Barton will appear twice this week at the Edwardsburg Area Historical Museum. The singer, songwriter, author, biologist and analyst will perform her folk songs at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, at the museum.

Then she will sign two of her latest books at the museum’s 20th anniversary open house, along with one of Edwardsburg’s other authors, Colin Knapp, after the All-School Reunion on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 19.

Barton is a wildlife biologist, scientist and resource analyst with the Michigan Department of Transportation, with a bachelor’s and master’s degrees in her chosen field. She also has penned several books, two of which she will sign during her appearance this coming Sunday.

The first, “The Amazing Adventures of a Midwestern Girl,” was self-published in January and includes stories on people that she knew when the 1976 Edwardsburg graduate lived in the Village of Edwardsburg.

The second, “Manoomin: The Story of Wild Rice in Michigan,” was published by the Michigan State University Press in the spring of 2018. It deals extensively with the resurgence of the growing of wild rice by Michigan’s Native American tribes with which Barton has worked.

Barton also has enjoyed a career as a singer, guitarist and songwriter, as evidenced by recognition as the Detroit Music Awards Best Vocalist in Folk Music, and the Metro Area Artists and Songwriters Association Songwriter of the Year Resident Artist at Isle Royale National Park.

Colin Knapp graduated from Edwardsburg High School in 1995. He published his first collection of short stories, “Shady Trails in a Light Fog,” in 2017 but he had been writing for several years. His two ebooks of poetry, “Dragon” and “Oasis,” were published in 2013 and 2015, respectively.

A graduate of the United States Naval Academy with a degree in English, Knapp served in the Navy and spent some time in California before returning to Edwardsburg in 2011, where he has been writing ever since.
