Fall high school sports get under way with tennis, soccer and CC

NILES — High school sports get under way later this week with a handful of teams in action.

The Niles and Edwardsburg tennis teams will travel to Vicksburg to compete in the Bulldogs’ annual tennis invitational.

Joining Vicksburg, Niles and Edwardsburg will be Grand Rapids Christian, Parma Western, Mattawan, Battle Creek Harper Creek and Portage Northern.

The format will be four flights of singles and four flights of doubles. All matches we be a best-of-three with match tiebreak for the third set.

Singles will begin play at 9 a.m. at Mattawan High School, while doubles flights will be played at Vicksburg with the same starting time.

Due to construction, the main parking lot at Vicksburg has been closed. Parking is available at the middle school lot just north of the tennis complex.

VanDenBerg Invitational

The annual VanDenBerg soccer invitational will be played at Niles and Brandywine high schools on Saturday.

Niles will host Cassopolis, while Brandywine will host Buchanan. Both matches begin at 10 a.m.

The winners advance to Brandywine for the championship game at noon. Niles will host the consolation match, also scheduled for noon.

Viking Stampede

The Niles cross country team will host Buchanan, Benton Harbor, Michigan City, Plainwell, Lakeshore and Watervliet for its Viking Stampede at Madeline Bertrand Park Friday.

The boys will kick things off at 5 p.m. with the girls race slated to begin at approximately 5:40 p.m.
