LMC offers new law enforcement trainings

BENTON HARBOR — Lake Michigan College is offering two new courses for law enforcement officers this fall on the Benton Harbor campus.

Use of Force in Law Enforcement is an eight-hour course designed to help students understand the Supreme Court’s standards governing the use of force and how those standards apply to common law enforcement situations. Students will also learn about the civil liability connected to use of force situations.

Graduates will receive a certificate of completion from the Lake Michigan College Criminal Justice Program.

The course is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, in the Todd Center, classroom 2304.

The Field Training Officer: Coaching Model course is specifically designed for experienced uniformed patrol personnel selected to serve as Master Police Coaches. 

This 40-hour course emphasizes the Field Training Officer’s role in assisting probationary employees to certify for solo patrol operations. Graduates will receive a Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards certificate of completion.

The course runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 15 to 19 in The Mendel Center’s North Training Room.

Each course will be taught by Bruce A. Sokolove, the president of Field Training Associates. Sokolove is a member of the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards basic police training advisory board and is national past president of the Michigan State University School of Criminal Justice National Alumni Advisory Board. He’s served as a police officer in Massachusetts and Michigan. He served as executive officer — Patrol Commander and undersheriff of the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department. He holds a master of science degree in police administration from Michigan State University.
