DOWAGIAC — No one was injured in a fire Monday morning, according to the Dowagiac Police Department.

Police responded to a fire around 9:37 a.m. Monday morning at 114 Clyborn St., Dowagiac. Within an hour, the fire was extinguished and contained, according to Director of Public Safety Steve Grinnewald.

Grinnewald said that the fire, which is believed by investigators to be electrical in nature, started in the back of the house. The fire was reported by neighbors after they noticed smoke coming from the back of the house. There was no one inside the home at the time of the fire. A family dog was inside, but neighbors were able to extract the dog from the house before emergency personnel arrived on scene.

“Our fire crews got here and on initial entry did what they could. We called for assistance and got [the fire] knocked out quickly,” Grinnewald said. “The really fortunate part of all this is that nobody was injured. No one was hurt.”

Despite having been inside the building, Grinnewald said he cannot assess the amount of damage done to the house.

“We are not in the position to call it a total loss or anything like that,” he said. “There was fire coming through the roof, so that is pretty much damaged, but beyond that, we don’t know.”

The Dowagiac Fire Department was assisted on the scene by the Pokagon Township Fire Department, the Sister Lakes Fire Department and the Wayne Township Fire Department.
