NILES — The Four Flags Chamber of Commerce will once again light up the night sky with a firework show to celebrate Independence Day this July. But first, they need a little help from the community and business owners to raise funds for the show.
The Niles Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular will take place at approximately 9:40 p.m. Tuesday, July 3, at the Apple Festival Grounds, 1740 Lake St. The gates will open to the public at 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, though a $5 donation for parking is encouraged. The first 1,000 vehicles that enter will receive a small American flag. Glow in the dark bracelets and necklaces will be sold at the gates for $1 each.
Those who come to the show can also choose snacks from concessions, including cotton candy, hot dogs, chips, beverages and elephant ears.
Katie Feehan, the membership and communications director, said previous firework shows have attracted between 6,000 to 7,000 people to watch the Fireworks Spectacular. This year, Feehan said they have hired a new company called, Melrose Pyrotechnics, that will offer residents more bang for their buck.
“The fireworks might be bigger and better than what we have had in recent years,” Feehan said. “It should be pretty cool.”
The company is known for using fireworks that create designs in the night sky. Those who attend the firework show will see fireworks that take the shape of smiley faces, palm trees, flowers and hearts. Feehan said the show is expected to last about 30 minutes.
For more than 30 years, the Four Flags Chamber of Commerce has traditionally put on the firework show in Niles.
This year, the chamber needs to raise about $10,000 to put on the show. So far, about $5,000 has been raised. The deadline to raise the money is June 22.
Funds for the firework show are supported by local businesses and community members, as well as the city of Niles. For businesses, sponsoring the show will lead to the opportunity to be recognized. Depending on how much they donate, businesses can have their name listed on a letter sign, logo sign and banner, which will be displayed at the event.
Community members are also welcome to donate what they can to support the event, by visiting the Four Flags Chamber of Commerce website.
“The great success of the show can only be attributed to the greater Niles area community members, and the city of Niles for their ongoing support,” Feehan said. “We appreciate any amount.”
Any additional funds raised from the event will be used by the chamber to put on other community events.
With the chance to celebrate the holiday with their family and friends, Feehan encouraged people to come out and see the firework show.
“This is an event solely for the community,” Feehan said. “You can show your support just by showing up and being there every year. And it will be fun.”
