Elkhart man injured after car versus deer crash

MASON TOWNSHIP — A 55-year-old Elkhart man was hospitalized after he swerved to miss a deer in the roadway and crashed the car. 

The Cass County Sheriff’s Department responded to the crash at 7:51 a.m. on Grange Street west of Calvin Center Road in Mason Township.

Scott Lee Stoneburner, the driver of the vehicle, was traveling eastbound on Grange Street when a deer entered the roadway. Stoneburner swerved to avoid hitting the deer, running the vehicle off the roadway. The vehicle then crashed into a tree.

Porter Ambulance took Stoneburner to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment of his injuries. A seatbelt was worn and alcohol is not believed to be a factor. Cass County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by Porter Township Fire Department.
