Adams wins Southwest 10 Team Captain honor

HARTFORD — Senior Amy Adams was named Southwest 10 Conference captain at the league track meet hosted by Hartford May 22.

Adams helped the Rangers to a fourth-place finish in the girls meet, which was won by Centreville with 162.5 points.

Marcellus was second with 123.5 points, Bangor third with 80 points and Cassopolis fourth with 77 points.

Adams took first place in the 800- and 1,600-meter runs, as well as second place in the 3,200-meter run.

She set a new personal best in both the 800 and 1,600 runs with times of 2:29.56 and 5:31.67 respectively.

Here time in the 1,600-meters broke the 38-year-old Cassopolis school record of 5:36.3 held by Gail McIntyre.

Her runner-up time in the 3,200-meters was 12:40.88.

Adams scored 28 points by herself, the most of any female athlete at the meet.

“Amy won the team captain winning two (800 and 1,600) out of three of her events,” said Cassopolis coach Janice Gatson. “She also broke the school record (5:36.30) in the 1,600 (she ran 5:31.62). She finished second in the two-mile. Amy will also be competing at the state finals in all three events.”

She will now set her sights on the Division 4 state meet at Hudsonville High School Saturday.

Adams won Division 4 regional championships in the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs. She set personal bests in the 800 and 1,600, while she broke the Cassopolis school record in the 3,200-meters with her time of 12:29.81.

Adams is currently ranked No. 8 and No. 10 in the 1,600 and 800 respectively.

Sophie Fiala was a two-time Southwest 10 champion as she won the 100- and 300-meter hurdles.

In the 100-meter high hurdles she ran a time of 16.00, while in the intermediate hurdles she posted a time of 47.09, which is also a new Cassopolis school record.

The Ranger’s 400-meter relay team of Ashante Gibson, Gabby Rowan, Santaja Gibson and Fiala finished second with a time of 54.31. The same team was fourth in the 800-meter relay with a clocking of 1:59.73.

Tammea McNeal was third in the shot put with a toss of 33-10 and fifth in the discus with a throw of 90-03.

The Ranger boys track team finished 10th in the meet won by Mendon with 111 points.

Jonathan Leach was fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 18.13.

Cassopolis was third in the 400-meter relay with the team of Eian Forrest, Kiambu Gary, Darrion Gatson and Brett Williams, who ran a time of 47.94.
