DOWAGIAC — The streets of Dowagiac were crowded down each side of the sidewalk Monday morning as people wearing patriotic clothing waited to catch a glimpse of a parade as it floated down Front Street. The parade featured shining floats, respected veterans and young students with instruments secured around their necks.

The city of Dowagiac hosted its annual Memorial Day celebration Monday. The event began with a ceremony, featuring speakers Don Lyon and VFW Commander Bill Bobik, at 10:30 a.m. outside of city hall. The parade, which kicked off at 11 a.m., proceeded to Riverside Cemetery for a Veterans’ Service. The event was hosted by the Masons of Peninsular Lodge #10.

Though the event was cause for celebration, before the parade could begin, Bobik reminded the attendants what Memorial Day is all about.

“This is about honoring those who gave their lives in the line of duty,” he said.

Bowing his head toward the bottom of the podium on which he stood, Bobik asked everyone to take a moment to acknowledge those who had lost a loved one from service.

“The men and women who have given their lives in service of this nation are heroes,” he said. “When their country called, they answered. To truly honor their sacrifice, we make ensure that these individuals are never forgotten.”

Mayor Lyons also asked the crowd to honor fallen soldiers on Memorial Day.
