DOWAGIAC — Host Dowagiac continued to show why it is having trouble picking up victories this season as it was swept by visiting Paw Paw Thursday.

The Chieftains split with Paw Paw, dropping the opening game 15-1, but rallied to win the nightcap 15-13.

The split left Dowagiac with a 4-18 overall record.

“Routine plays continue to plague us,” said Dowagiac coach Mike Benhke. “We are having trouble fielding routine ground balls and making basic throws. Our bats came alive in the second game and we did a great job of coming back in the sixth after giving up the lead in the top of the inning.”

The Chieftains had just two hits in the opening game. Amiyah Smith tripled for Dowagiac.

In the nightcap, the Chieftains had nine hits, including doubles by Mona Aranda, Anna Dobberstein, Taylor Froehlich and Smith, who had a pair of doubles.

“Amiyah was the clutch player. She is delivering the two-out bases loaded clearing double with two strikes to get us the lead back,” Behnke said.

Jessie Hulett picked up the victory in relief.
