PAW PAW — The Dowagiac golf team is currently in third place following a pair of Wolverine Conference jamborees earlier this week.
The Chieftains finished third at Heritage Glen in the jamboree hosted by Paw Paw and were fifth in the season-opening jamboree hosted by Vicksburg at Angel’s Crossing.
The Chieftains shot 190 at Heritage Glen Wednesday and 199 at Angel’s Crossing.
Plainwell has won the first two jamborees with scores of 173 and 183 respectively. Edwardsburg is currently second in the standings after shooting 176 at Angel’s Crossing and 183 at Heritage Glen.
Plainwell’s Jacob Farris had been the medalist for the first two jamborees shooting 39 and 42 respectively.
Dowagiac has been led by Nick Saltzman, who has shot 43 and 44 at Angel’s Crossing and Heritage Glen, to finish in the top 10 at both jamborees. Drew Phillips shot 49 and 44 for the Chieftains.
“I found out that, like I thought, our kids are tough mentally and physically,” Dowagiac coach Bob Turner said. “The conditions were tough on Tuesday and a little better on Wednesday.
We have practiced in a lot of bad weather — rain and snow-and that prepared us for the first couple matches. Our key will be to keep getting better on the mental side of the game so we can have success when the weather is good and everyone is playing better.”
Edwardsburg’s David Kancuzewski shot 45 at the Vicksburg jamboree and 43 at the Paw Paw jamboree.
