DOWAGIAC — Police on are the scene at Dowagiac schools following a threat made against the schools.

Before noon on Tuesday, police and extra security were brought to Dowagiac Middle School and Dowagiac Union High School after a threat was found written on the wall of a bathroom in the high school. Though district officials cannot release the details of the threat, the threat was directed to take place Wednesday, according to Dowagiac Union Schools Superintendent Paul Hartsig.

Dowagiac Police officers are currently on site at the high school interviewing students about the threat, conducting an investigation and ensuring the building is secure. No lockdown has been declared at this time, and Hartsig said that he is unsure if school will be cancelled due to the threat.

“We are still investigating right now,” Hartsig said. “A lot will ride on the investigation today and whether or not this is a credible threat, whether this is a hoax, whether or not we find the person who did it, those kinds of things.”

The school district will provide more information to parents later today.

This is a developing story.
