BERRIEN SPRINGS — Honor Credit Union recently announced the results of its 2017 Free Community Shred Day campaign.

As part of its green initiative, Honor staff was able to recycle 50,240 pounds of paper in 2017, the equivalent weight of 12.5 large cars, representatives said.

Honor hosted eight shred day events throughout its communities in the upper and lower peninsulas, including at its Dowagiac branch office.

During the free event, the community was invited to bring sensitive documents to the branch for a chance to shred them on the spot. This promotes the protection of personal information and a chance to recycle all unused papers, company officials said.

Each branch recycled more than a ton of paper.

Results from each branch officer were:

Dowagiac — 8,930 pounds

Plainwell — 3,420 pounds

Paw Paw — 4,940 pounds

Berrien Springs — 5,700 pounds

Battle Creek — 3,800 pounds

Coldwater —5,130 pounds

St. Joseph — 14,820 pounds

Gwinn — 3,500 pounds

Honor Credit Union is dedicated to going green by providing its members with online and mobile banking, the opportunity to sign up for e-statements, and having paperless transactions, officials said.

The 2018 Free Community Shred Day schedule will be released in February.
