Dowagiac opens with sweep of Bucks, Shamrocks

BERRIEN SPRINGS — The Dowagiac wrestling team opened the 2017-18 season with a sweep of Buchanan and host Berrien Springs Wednesday night.
The Chieftains defeated the Bucks 50-27 and the Shamrocks 61-18.
Edwardsburg defeated Berrien Springs 63-18 and Buchanan 64-15.
Picking up two victories on the night for Dowagiac were Avion Ruiz at 112 pounds, Kody Walker at 119, Jessie Edge at 125, Alex McIntosh at 130, Nick Turnbow at 145, Xander Keller at 152 and 160, Justin Lyle at 171 and 189 and Dylan Andersen at 215.
Earning one win in the opener were Tyler Huston at 103, Adrian Lee at 130, Lamberto Paredes at 160 and Wyatt Bailey at 285.
The Chieftains will head to Vicksburg for the annual Bulldog Invitational on Saturday.
Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
Also participating in the team tournament will be Brandywine, Three Rivers, Portage Northern, Lakewood, Decatur, Coloma, Climax-Scotts and Schoolcraft.
In the opening round, Dowagiac will face Climax-Scotts, while Brandywine will face Three Rivers.
Round two will pit the Chieftains against Decatur and Brandywine against Climax-Scotts.
Dowagiac and Schoolcraft will square off in round three with Brandywine taking on Decatur.
The Chieftains and Coloma will take the match against each other in round four, while the Bobcats will face Schoolcraft.
Dowagiac and Three Rivers, along with Brandywine and Coloma will square off in the fifth and final round.
Admission is $5 per person and no league passes will be accepted.
Concessions will be available throughout the tournament.
The Dowagiac wrestling program is celebrating 60 years this season and will kick off the celebration with Alumni Night on Wednesday for the home opener against Edwardsburg.
All Dowagiac wrestling alumni will be admitted free and introduced prior to the Wolverine Conference match with the Eddies.
Alumni should arrive by 6 p.m. and meet in the hospitality room at Dowagiac Union High School.
Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
