Tanda Stiffler believes that community is important.
A member of the Edwardsburg Lions Club, along with her husband Dave, for nearly a decade, she practices what she believes, being involved in several community projects through the group.
Calling herself a Lion through and through, Stiffler shares some of her insights through the Lions Club.
How did you get involved with the Lions Club?
[Dave and I] had been asked. Dave’s dad started in the Lions Club in the 1950s, so he had asked us to join a few times. About 10 years ago, we went to an event and we were very impressed with everything we were hearing. It turned out to be very rewarding for us.
What do you with the Lions Club?
I’m the zone chair with the Lions Clubs, so I go and visit six other Lions Clubs discussing different platforms. I’m also Leo advisor for a youth branch of the Lions Club. So, far it’s been great. The kids are really great and eager. In addition to that, we do Project Kidsight with the Lions Club, which provides eye screenings to children. We just recently got a report and our district did the most eye screenings in the state of Michigan. We do very well with it.
Why do you think the Lions Club is unique as an organization?
The Lions is known all over the world. They do service all over the world. When these recent hurricanes and disasters happened, they were there to help within hours to start giving money, giving water, giving whatever people needed. So, it’s nice to feel like we are part of that. Plus, if there is anything in Edwardsburg, the Lions jump right in and take care of it. We really just get involved whenever we hear something, then step up to help.
Why do you think people should volunteer in their communities?
You get a sense of pride. You get to feel good knowing that you are out there and not just thinking about yourself all the time. You are helping others. It just makes you feel good inside.
