Two of the best runners in the Wolverine Conference squared off at the Dowagiac Middle School as visiting Edwardsburg defeated Dowagiac in a league dual Tuesday.

Dowagiac’s Shawn Little, fresh off of setting a new school record for a 5K race on Saturday in Otsego, defeated Edwardsburg’s Jack Leman in the boys race.

Little ran a time of 16:42, his fastest of the year on his home course, to edge Leman, who posted a personal best time of 17:04.

The Eddies defeated the Chieftains 23-32.

Edwardsburg grabbed spots two through five to defeat Dowagiac.

“The guys had a close race,” Dowagiac coach Dan VandenHeede said. “Edwardsburg had a nice pack around 20 minutes that we could not break up. That is the goal for David (Napier), Billy (Leonard) and Qwintrayl. Stay as a pack and drop below 20 [minutes] or so.”

The Eddies swept the top five spots to defeat Dowagiac, which did not have a complete team cross the finish line.

Cameron Cleveland grabbed the top spot once again for Edwardsburg with a time of 20:06.

Sophia Mick (20:55), Chloe Bartz (22:00), Zoe Pegura (23:52) and Anna Cleveland (25:03) rounded out the top five for the Eddies.

Dowagiac’s Kellyn Daly finished sixth overall with a time of 25:30.

“I was very pleased with both the girls and boys team results,” Edwardsburg coach Beth Gunn said. “Many kids ran season bests or personal records today. My kids love this course. It is a genuine cross country race with wooded trails and some rolling hills — true cross country style.”

Gunn said that her team is already looking forward to returning to Dowagiac for the Rock N Run next week.
