The Dowagiac soccer team is still looking for the right formula to pick up wins in the Wolverine Conference.
The Chieftains dropped to 1-4 in league matches after visiting Sturgis defeated Dowagiac 5-3 Monday.
Dowagiac is not 9-5 overall after getting off to a 7-0 start.
“It was an extremely physical game,” Dowagiac coach Mike Williams said. “We were unable to handle the unchecked fouls resulting in goals against us. We have to be sure to maintain composure against tough opponents. ”
The Trojans jumped out to a 3-0 first-half lead on the Chieftains as Anthony Bucio, John Patino and Irving Gonzalez all scored goals in the opening 25 minutes of the match.
Dowagiac was able to get on the board before halftime as Adrian Lee scored to make it 3-1 in the 33rd minute.
Dowagiac scored the first goal of the second half and appeared to be right back in the match when Gage Williams found the back of the net in the 50th minute off an assist by Alec Saylor.
Back-to-back Sturgis goals in the 60th and 66th minutes ended any hope of a comeback by the Chieftains.
Dowagiac was able to score the final goal of the night in the 76th minute as Saylor was able to get the ball past the Sturgis keeper on a penalty kick.
Sturgis outshot the Chieftains 15-11 in the contest.
