EDWARDSBURG — It took more than 45 minutes for someone to score in the highly competitive Dowagiac at Edwardsburg Wolverine Conference match Monday.

Jack Knoll scored in the 46th minute, off an assist from Isaac Toms off a corner kick, to give the Eddies a 1-0 victory over the Chieftains.

Edwardsburg remains undefeated in conference matches as it improved to 4-0. Dowagiac drops to 1-3 in the Wolverine.

“It was a well-played and very competitive game,” said Dowagiac coach Mike Williams. “We marked extremely well and countered throughout the game. We took away a lot of scoring opportunities for Edwardsburg by shutting down a couple of their key players.

“Cristian Wilson did a great job on their strong forward and the defense did a great job covering and switching with each other.

“As a team, this was our best played game of the year.”

The player that Williams referred to was Toms, who, according to Edwardsburg coach Sean Jesse, is the key to making the Eddies’ offense click.

“Isaac is the engine that makes our offense go,” Jesse said. “He is extremely talented with the ball at his feet, sees the field incredibly well and is able to see runs and distribute the ball with precision.

“Isaac is our leading goal scorer as well as having the most assists on the team. As one of our captains, he is leading this team through an incredibly successful season.”

Jesse said that Dowagiac’s effort was the reason that only one goal was scored.

“Dowagiac played physical and fast, which made it difficult for us to find a rhythm,” he said. “Though we had the majority of the run of play, we struggled to finish and Dowagiac effectively counter-attacked us making this a close game.”
