Round Oak donates more than $1,000 to Beckwith Theatre Company

The combination of great food and great fun proved to be a winning one for the staff of Round Oak Revisited and members of the Beckwith Theatre Company.

Late last month, the two entities joined forces for a one night only fundraiser, “Raise the Roof,” at the downtown restaurant, which featured a performance by the local community theater’s improv comedy troupe.

The event was a complete sellout with more than 100 people in attendance, and generated more than $1,000 from ticket sales and proceeds from a silent auction conducted during the event.

“Everything went off without a hitch,” said Round Oak Revisited owner Cindy Brosnan. “The production was excellent, and the actors were absolutely hilarious.”

As the name of the fundraiser implies, the restaurant recently donated the money to the Beckwith to help cover the costs of the theater’s new roof, which crews from Fryman’s Roofing Company installed last month.

Brosnan, who resurrected the former Round Oak Restaurant on Front Street last year with her husband, Bob, reached out to the nine-member comedy group right after their performance in early March at the playhouse. After attending the performance that night, Brosnan said she was so impressed by what she saw that she wanted to invite the actors to perform at her restaurant to draw a crowd to the business as well as to lend a hand to the theater’s slate of improvements.

“We were nervous to do another show so soon after our last performance,” said Ryan Murray, who founded the improv group with fellow Beckwith actor James Huffman in 2015. “However, we took Cindy’s advice and decided to ‘strike while the iron was hot.’”

Last month’s performance more than exceeded Murray’s expectations. In spite of his and other the members’ concerns about the acoustics and small performing space (the restaurant converted its bistro area into a makeshift stage for the show), the show went off flawlessly, due in large part to the Beckwith’s tech person, Matt Davidson.

The improv group is hoping to carry the momentum of the fundraiser into additional shows throughout the year. The group is open for booking for various functions, including private parties, with proceeds the group makes going toward the Beckwith, Murray said.

“We love performing, which is why we keep doing it,” Huffman said.

Several companies donated items for the silent auction at the fundraiser, including:

• Bow Wow Bakery & Bath

• John & Curt’s Brake & Alignment

• Bakeman Barbers

• Booth’s Country Florist

• Fresh Hot Tanning

• Saylor’s Front Street Pizzeria

The tickets for the event were printed gratis by Rich McCormick with Preferred Printing.
