Athlete Showcase: Dowagiac’s Nick Foote

Nick Foote is a senior on the Dowagiac baseball team.
What has been one of your greatest accomplishments as an athlete?
NF: Joining the South Bend Cubs youth baseball program and deciding to continue my baseball career into college.
What has been one of your biggest disappointments as an athlete?
NF: Breaking my wrist and missing my entire senior season.
What has been a hardship in your life?
NF: Losing my brother at birth.
Who is a “hero” in your life and why?
NF: My brother, because I do not take things for granted.
When are you the most nervous while you are competing?
NF: Before the game I get the pre-game jitters.
Describe an embarrassing athletic moment.
NF: The first home run I ever hit instead of jogging around the bases I was at a full sprint.
How do you tend to work out/train when by yourself?
NF: Lots of quality repetition work such as hitting in the cage and throwing a bullpen.
What other sport would you like to compete in if you were not playing yours?
NF: Soccer.
Why are sports an important part of a high school experience?
NF: Sports teach a level of discipline and character school alone cannot reach.
How would you give away $50,000?
NF: I would start a memorial scholarship in my brother’s name.
If you could be the head coach of a team for a year, what team would you choose?
NF: Dowagiac baseball
If I did not play sports, I would…?
NF: Go fishing a lot more.
What is the most challenging thing for you to do in your sport?
NF: Right now the most challenging thing is setting on the sideline unable to play due to a broken wrist.
If you could change one rule about your sport, what would it be?
NF: I would change the “if it is close, then it is a strike” rule.
What is the best compliment you have ever received?
NF: All of my coaches call me one of the best utility players they have seen.
What was the scariest thing you have had to do? Are you glad you did it?
NF: Almost every year joining a brand new team where I did not know a single person. Very glad I did it.
What was the last thing you saw someone do that really impressed you?
NF: A player dove for a foul ball even though he knew there was no chance of catching it. This shows grit.
What is your favorite hobby? Why?
NF: Fishing because it’s easy and relaxing.
