Competitors race to eat cool treats during Caruso’s annual contest

While the words “below freezing” and “ice cream sundaes” usually go together like hot soup and a July day, on Saturday they made a perfect combination — at least for spectators standing outside Caruso’s Candy & Soda Shop.
The venerable Front Street shop hosted its annual ice cream eating contest in conjunction with the Ice Time Festival that day, offering participants a chance to win a gift certificate to the establishment.
The competitors were tasked with being the first to complete a banana spilt sundae, with all the fixings, without a spoon or the ability to lift their bowl. On top of ending up with faces caked with ice cream, every one of the eager eaters left that afternoon with a pin that read “I pigged out at Caruso’s.”
This year’s winners were:
Ages 8 and younger — Caleb Gilmer
Ages 9 through 15 — Kamren Stanton
Ages 15 and older — Sean Boyer
