What’s happening at the Niles District Library?

The Niles District Library is building a community of lifelong learners that want to make Niles their lifelong home. You do not need a library card to participate in any of our programs, and all of the programs are free. Monday, Dec. 12
• 10 a.m. to noon — Special Edition
Special Edition is a series of programs designed to be accessible and engaging for adults and children with special needs. Anyone is welcome to attend the events.
Tuesday, Dec. 13
• 10:30 a.m. — Passport Pals
Join the library each Tuesday for a special storytime tour of the world. Each week, there will be books, songs, a craft and other surprises relating to the special country of the month.
• Noon — Trebelaires performance sponsored by Niles Noon Optimist Club
Join the library on your lunch break for music in the Rotunda. The Trebelaires will perform, sponsored by the Niles Noon Optimist Club.
• 4 p.m. — NDL board meeting
• 6 to 6:30 p.m. — Chips and Chapters
Chips and Chapters is a fun, new, read-aloud storytime. Every Tuesday, Ms. Tara will read aloud from a chapter book, while you eat chips and follow along.
• 6:30 p.m. — Pajama Storytime
An evening of three stories, music and movement, and a craft. Participants are encouraged to wear their pajamas.
• 6:30 p.m. — Fiction for Foodies Christmas Party
The group will treat themselves and let someone else do all the cooking this month. They will meet at the regular time, 6:30 p.m., at Ho Ping Gardens Restaurant, 1962 S. 11th St, Niles. The group will discuss the books read throughout the year and what we will be read in 2017.
Wednesday, Dec. 14
• Multiple times — Storytime day
Squealers (birth to 18 months) at 9:30 a.m., Squigglers (18 months to 3 years) at 10 and 11 a.m., Storytime (3 to 5 years) at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Thursday, Dec. 15
• 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. — The Connection (Emergency Shelter Services)
This program of Emergency Shelter Services is a one-stop shop for help when housing is threatened, and for referrals and information. Representatives will be available at the library every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. For questions or information, contact Stephanie at (269) 277-5055.
• 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. — Storytime
• 1 to 4:30 p.m. — Mahjong
Volunteers are available to teach newbies how to play. Other board games are also available.
• 6 to 7:30 p.m. — Teen Time
Teens, come and hang out on from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday evenings, for a night dedicated to you! The library has games, books and a place to study in the new Teen Department. There will be a different theme each week and snacks will be provided.
Friday, Dec. 16
• 5 p.m. — South Bend Symphony Orchestra Ensemble
The sounds of the Wind Quintet Ensemble from South Bend Symphony Orchestra, will fill the library’s rotunda at 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16.
Saturday, Dec. 17
• 10 a.m. to noon — Chess Club
Love to play chess? This group meets twice monthly to play on the first and third Saturdays. All ages and abilities are welcome. Teachers are available to those who want to learn the game. Meet in the Children’s Department.
• 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. — Yoga at the library
This free class is for all skill levels. Bring a yoga mat and some water. If you don’t have a yoga mat, there will be a limited number of mats to borrow.
