Michigan Republicans made their voices heard Tuesday by voting incumbent Congressman Fred Upton back into office by a wide margin.

Upton beat out his democratic opponent, Paul Clements, 192,862 votes to 119,871, according to the Detroit Free Press. In a distant third was libertarian candidate Lorence Wenke, with 16,239 votes.

“The voters have clearly spoken, and I want to congratulate Donald Trump on a hard fought victory here in Michigan and across the country,” Upton said in a news release. “I’ve said all along I would be willing and able to work with whoever was elected our next president because lets face it: We’ve got a lot of work to do.”

Clements called Upton to concede the race — after it was reported by the AP that Upton was the winner — and wished his opponent well, according to a release.

“While I am disappointed at the result, the people of Southwest Michigan have spoken,” said Clements. “I congratulate Congressman Upton on winning his 16th term, and I hope he will take greater strides to distance himself from the extremists within his own party. The dysfunction in Congress must end for the good of our country.”

In a separate statement, Upton echoed the words and sentiments of Clements.

“It’s time to put the divisiveness of the past behind us, and come together as a nation. Building a better future for our children is something all Americans have in common and is a goal we all need to work towards.”
