Incumbent State Representative Aaron Miller, R-Sturgis, has claimed victory over his democratic opponent, Carol Higgins of Mendon, in Michigan’s State House race for District 59.
Miller earned 17,518 votes, while Higgins earned 8,501, according to unofficial results from The Detroit Free Press as of 11:10 p.m. Tuesday, with 30 of 39 precincts reporting.
“I’m very satisfied tonight, very happy to see the results that are coming in. It’s been a good two years,” Miller said. “I’m very grateful to the voters of the 59th district, and grateful for a chance to serve again.”
Miller had kind words to say of Higgins, and the race for the house seat.
“Carol ran a great race. She worked hard,” he said. “It was a very positive campaign and I think that’s what people like to see.”
Higgins echoed Millers sentiment about the positivity of the race.
“I acknowledge Aaron’s win and wish him well,” she said. “I appreciate the fact that people came out and voted, and wish Aaron the best.”
Miller and Higgins differed on several key issues in the state, including concealed weapons and energy creation and usage. Earlier this year, Miller co-sponsored legislation on non-permit conceal carry in Michigan. He has also spoken out against federal regulations on coal plant emissions, which have forced some plants to shut down in the state.
