Locals will have a chance to test drive some of Ford’s newest vehicles — while raising some money for students — Saturday morning.
Organizers with the 2017 Celebration Graduation will team up with employees with Dowagiac’s C. Wimberley Ford, offering free test drives of more than a dozen new cars, SUVs, pickup trucks and more during the upcoming “Drive 4UR School” fundraiser. The event will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Dowagiac Union High School.
During the fundraiser, visitors will have the chance to take a short test drive of any of the vehicles parked at the high school lot, taking them for a spin down M-51 and Division Street.
After they get done with the ride, they will be asked to fill out a short, eight to 10 question survey.
There will not be any sales pitches from any of the volunteers working the event, said Celebration Graduation organizer Martha Hassle.
“It should take people less than 20 minutes, from the time they get out of their own car until they get back in it again,” Hassle said.
In order to participate, all attendees have to do is fill out a short registration form and present a valid driver’s license to organizers, as well as be 18 years old or older, Hassle said.
For every test drive, Celebration Graduation will receive $20 from Ford Motor Company, up to a maximum of 300 drivers, or $6,000.
“It is a phenomenal fundraiser,” Hassle said. “It does not require anyone from the community to invest any money — just time.”
Celebration Graduation will use proceeds from the fundraiser to help pay the around $25,000 necessary to fund a special trip for members of the 2017 senior class the night of their graduation next spring.
The organization, which is led by parents every year, has participated in the series of Ford fundraisers since 2010, raising more than $5,000 every year, Hassle said. This year, the organizers are hoping to attract enough drivers to raise the maximum $6,000, she said.
On top of the test drives, members will also hosting a bake sale to raise proceeds for the cause.
