The Michigan State Police confirmed that a Niles resident dug up a dangerous surprise in his lawn Friday morning.
According to Sgt. Mike Dawson of the Michigan State Police, a Niles resident living in the 3300 block of Bell Road, between Ironwood Road and the county line contacted authorities when he found a grenade, with the pin still intact, while digging in his yard.
“He dug up a grenade,” Dawson said. “It was old and rusty but it was real.”
The Michigan State Police Department’s bomb squad out of Grand Rapids was called to the scene.
Dawson said the grenade was removed by the bomb squad, taken to another location and detonated.
The police were called to the scene at approximately 10:30 a.m. and had cleared the area by 2 p.m.
