The Niles Scream Park has handed out a frightening amount of money in the form of scholarships over the last 20-plus years — $48,900 to 128 high school students to be exact.

Recently, the non-profit organization’s board of directors announced the names of graduates who will receive scholarships from the Niles Scream Park community project this year.

Board members said these graduates stood out based on their academic success, involvement in the Michiana community and future aspirations to become civic leaders.

The scholarship recipients are:

• Morgan Altergott, Niles High School, “Lou Milley Memorial Scholarship”

• Anna Lancaster, Brandywine High School, “John Carlson Memorial Scholarship”

• Desiree Love, Niles High School, “Gottlieb Christ Memorial Scholarship”

• Jasmine Love, Niles High School, “Gottlieb Christ Memorial Scholarship”

• Jacob DeVlaminck, Buchanan High School, “Keith Shurte Memorial Scholarship”

• Brianna Gleason, Brandywine High School, “Keith Shurte Memorial Scholarship”

• Sloan Kangas, Brandywine High School, “Keith Shurte Memorial Scholarship”

• Jalessa Garner, Brandywine High School, “Niles Haunted House Scholarship

• Elizabeth Moody, Brandywine High School, “Niles Haunted House Scholarship”

The scholarships are made possible by the volunteers at the Niles Scream Park. Each year, a select group of individuals donate their time to support local high school graduates.

In addition to local scholarships, the Niles Scream Park community project supports more than 65 area charities and non-profit groups.

Proceeds benefitted local school and service organizations including groups such as the Make a Wish Foundation, Boy Scouts, Pets Connect, the American Cancer Society (Haunters for Hope team) and Positively Dance. Last year, the 42nd consecutive year for running the project, raised over $106,000.

More than 1.5 million dollars have been raised since 1996.

The Scream Park, which is located at 855 Mayflower Road in Niles, officially opens Friday, Sept. 16.
