Public hearing tonight for Niles 2017 budget

Niles residents will have a chance to comment on the city’s proposed 2017 budget during a public hearing at 5:55 p.m. Monday inside council chambers.

Administrator Ric Huff has said city leaders were tasked with overcoming a $300,000 deficit between projected revenues and expenditures, due to a variety of things, including flat revenue sharing from the state and increases in pension and healthcare contributions.

The fire and police departments are among the departments hardest hit by this year’s budget.

Chief Larry Lamb said he trimmed approximately $150,000 from the fire department’s budget of nearly $1.2 million.

Cuts included a reduction in the department’s part-time program to save around $75,000. All full-time staff will retain their jobs.

Lamb said the reduction in the part-time force means that the department will have one less firefighter on staff during the evening and overnight shifts.

Lamb said two full-time firefighters are on staff at all times on a normal workday. He said the department had been using the part-time staff to add one more firefighter per shift, resulting in three firefighters being on staff for all three shifts.

Under the new budget, Lamb said the department would have a part-time person for the day-time shift, but not the other two shifts.

“We will still provide good quality service. It is just a little tougher each time we squeeze,” he said.

Lamb also said he trimmed his equipment purchases in half and was not able to place any money in savings for large capital purchases, such as a new fire engine. He said the department has not been able to save for large capital purchases for several years.
