A team of representatives from the Wolverine Pipeline Company, of Niles, performed the third annual “Day of Caring” for a Niles cancer patient in conjunction with the Berrien County Cancer Services on Friday, Aug. 5.

The patient, Louise Adams, was overjoyed to see her home transformed into a more healing environment, according to Renee’ Reid-Smith, of the BCCS.

Kachur Tree Service, of Niles, also spent four hours removing three large pine trees that had fallen into Adams’ yard in a recent storm.

Smith said the team from Wolverine Pipeline contributed more than 104 man-hours to the job.

Work included:

• Completing a new stairway to the backyard

• Removing a dangerous and unstable deck

• Installing smoke detectors and new lights

• Installing new basement stairs

• Installing a dehumidifier

David Brooks, a spokesperson for Wolverine Pipeline, said Wolverine employees look forward to the event because they enjoy being a beacon of light in the storm that is cancer. Team members also enjoy inspiring others to become involved in the Niles community, he said.

Tyanna Weller, president of the Four Flags Area Chamber of Commerce, provided breakfast, while Milano’s Pizza, of Niles, catered lunch and provided a gift to Adams.

Smith said the BCCS is able to provide skilled oncology nursing services and supportive resources at no cost to people in southwest Michigan because of its partnership with United Way of Southwest Michigan and the generosity of the community.
