Ontwa Township unseats several incumbents, passes millages

Several incumbent officials were unseated Tuesday in Ontwa Township, but two millages on the ballot successfully passed.
With both precincts reporting, Tina VanBelle defeated incumbent Teri McNaughton 338-270 for Ontwa Township clerk.
Meryl Christensen was running unopposed for township clerk.
Jerry Marchetti won the Republican nomination and Jeremy Reece the Democratic nomination for the Ontwa Township supervisor. The two will vie for the seat in November.In the race for Ontwa Township trustee, Dawn Bolock, Jerry Duck, Dan Stutsman and Jeff Kozinski won seats as they defeated Bobby Donnelly, Fritz Lambright, Bill Mahaney and Mike Mroczek.
Bolock led the way with 400 votes, while Duck finished with 392, Stutsman 322 and Kozinski 318.
Duck and Kozinski were incumbents, as was Mroczek.
The winners will run unopposed in the general election in November.
Ontwa Township voters also approved a pair of millage renewals and one new millage.
The fire and ambulance renewal won 635-157, while the police renewal won 557-230.
“I think it speaks to the body of work the department has done over the last four years,” Ontwa Township-Edwardsburg Police Chief Tim Kozal said. “We are dedicated to keep providing
exemplarily service to the citizens of Ontwa Township and the Village of Edwardsburg the next four years.”
“I want to thank the people for their support,” Edwardsburg Fire Department Chief Bruce Stack said. “It was just great to see their support.”
The Edwardsburg Ambulance Service’s additional millage request won 549-231.
“I am glad the community has the trust in us to continue to fund a local ambulance service,” Edwardsburg Ambulance Administrator Dennis Closson said. “Hopefully we can make some improvements to equipment and vehicles.”
Closson said that improving vehicles is at the top of the list.
“Our main goal right now is to improve the fleet,” he said.
