Alton Wayne Kempton Sr., 70, of Cassopolis, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus, Monday afternoon, June 13, 2016, in the presence and comfort of his family in his home.

Alton was born June 2, 1946, in Niles, Michigan, the second youngest child of Kenneth and Opal (Case) Kempton. He married Diane Cheryl Moore Nov. 23, 1968, in Niles, Michigan. She survives. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Patsy Lillie, Lucille Hoffman; and one brother Glen Kempton.

Alton’s grandchildren were his passion and his life. He loved spending time with them and teaching them about farming. He enjoyed fellowship with his church family. Alton spent his time farming and selling his fresh produce and talking to the people who stopped to buy from him. He always looked forward to the county fair. The draft horse shows were among his favorites.

Alton will be greatly missed by family and friends. He is survived by his wife of over forty seven years, Diane (Moore) Kempton of Cassopolis; one daughter, Pam (Tim) Wold of Cassopolis; two sons, Alton “Sonny” Kempton, Jr. of Niles, Jerry (Sonya) Kempton of North Carolina; thirteen grandchildren, Landon (Elizabeth) Wold of Cassopolis, Justin (Melanie) Wold of Three Rivers, Colin (Emily) Wold of Elkhart, Caleb Wold, Jacob Wold, Sarah Wold, Jeff Kempton, Jessica Kempton, Charlize Kempton, Tricia Kempton, Kathlene Kempton, Bobby Kempton, all at home, Cody Stick of Cassopolis; four great grandchildren; two sisters, Vera Hall of Dowagiac, Linda Kempton of Phoenix, Arizona; one brother, Roger (Maryellen) Kempton of Niles; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will gather Thursday, June 16, 2016 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. in Connelly Chapel Wagner Family Funerals, 202 North Broadway Street, Cassopolis. A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, June 17, 2016, at 11 a.m. in Penn Friends Church, 19107 Quaker St., Cassopolis. Mr. Kempton will be laid to rest in South Wayne Cemetery in Wayne Township, Michigan.

The family prefers contributions be made in Alton’s memory to the family.
