Another round of good drink, food and company is on tap for visitors to Don and Vicary Blackmond’s Sesquicentennial Farm off Indian Lake this summer, as the Lee Memorial Foundation hosts its fifth annual Wine and Beer Tasting event from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6.

Tickets are currently on sale for the fundraiser, available for purchase from organizers Beth Cripe and Tom Carlson for $50 per person. Each ticket includes unlimited tastings of wine and beers from several area vineyards and breweries, along with free hors d’oeurves, a souvenir wine glass and live entertainment by Mike Struwin & Company.

Returning vendors to this year’s event include Round Barn, Tabor Hill Cody Kresta, 12 Corners and Contessa wineries, and New Holland, Round Barn, Rochester Mills Beer Co., Saugatuck Brewing Company breweries. A trio of new companies join them, including Lazy Ballerina Winery, Roak Brewing Co. and Blake’s Hard Cider.

Members of the Lee Memorial Foundation, the fundraising arm of Dowagiac’s Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital, began selling tickets for the event earlier this month. Two hundred tickets have already been sold to the public — leaving only around 150 still available for purchase, Cripe said.

“They [the tickets] sell themselves, which is great,” she said. “People have gone enough times now they know they enjoy the event and want to keep coming back.”

Proceeds from the fundraiser will go toward paying for new patient care equipment for Borgess-Lee, the only hospital located in Cass County. These items, which will include everything from beds to specific pieces of medical equipment, will be employed in the areas of women’s health, radiology and cardiac rehabilitation, Cripe said.

Last year’s fundraiser was the most successful one yet, bringing in $20,000, Cripe said. These funds went toward paying for the renovation to hospital’s entrance area, which was completed earlier this month.

On top of the free food and drinks, attendees to the beer and wine tasting will have a chance to enter raffles for a number of valuable prizes — most notable of which will be tickets to games for Notre Dame athletics as well as for Chicago professional teams, Cripe said.

To purchase tickets, people can contact Cripe at (269) 783-3026 or Carlson at (269) 782-7788.

“What a great way to enjoy all the wonderful wines and beers southwest Michigan has to offer, along with a way to support our local hospital,” Cripe said. “It’s a two-for-one deal.”
