LANSING — With a stuffed kangaroo mascot strapped into its own seat and a blue sail featuring an ExpressSOS.com logo, Secretary of State Ruth Johnson kayaked from St. Ignace to Mackinac Island Thursday as a springboard to a promotional campaign for online services that’s sure to take off.

“I want everyone to hop online, not in line at ExpressSOS.com,” Johnson explained. “It’s painless.”

ExpressSOS.com allows customers to renew their tabs and driver’s licenses, get a duplicate registration, duplicate title, change their address and register to be an organ donor. And with its Print ’N Go feature, customers can renew their driver’s licenses and tabs for their vehicles, motorcycles or boats, print their receipt and drive legally until they get their card or sticker in the mail. On their eighth year, customers do need to visit a branch to get a new driver’s license so they can pass a vision test and get an updated photo.

The campaign, which was created by SOS staff with existing resources, features a kangaroo to encourage customers to hop online, not in line for their transactions, saving them a trip to a branch office.

“We hope our online transactions go up by leaps and bounds,” Johnson said. “An upswing in ExpressSOS.com means more convenience for customers plus shorter lines for anyone who does come to see us in person.”

The promotional campaign was launched now because the state recently completed updates that increased the number of people who can access the online services. This is the first effort to enhance the system left behind after the state terminated a contract with is prior vendor, Hewlett-Packard.

Johnson is an avid kayaker and has crossed the Straits of Mackinac twice to promote the Secretary of State’s official online services. She recently rode a Harley-Davidson Sportster 1200 from the Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry parking lot in Mackinaw City, across the gleaming, majestic Mackinac Bridge, to the scenic Bridge View Park in St. Ignace to raise awareness about motorcycle safety.
