I hope everyone enjoyed this year’s Veterans Day.

In today’s society, I think it’s safe to say most people know at least one vet, whether it’s a family member, friend, or co-worker. At the Niles State Police Post, there are eight Army vets, one Air Force vet, and one Navy vet. Our District Commander is a Marine vet. I feel I speak for all fellow veterans when I say it was a pleasure to serve.

I am also a “Buddy 2 Buddy” which is a resource for National Guard units. When assigned a unit, the “Buddy 2” goes to a drill and introduces themselves to the soldiers, advising they are there as a resource for assistance concerning the military.

We stress we are not religious members or counselors but like an information booth to help guide the soldier to the correct person for assistance. This resource can be used for any military member who may need assistance, not just active Guard, although this is where it started in Michigan.

Last week I discussed the upcoming winter and some winter safety tips. I will continue with that this week also.

When plowing or shoveling your driveways and sidewalks, please remember the following:

257.677a Obstruction of safety vision by removal or deposit of snow, ice, or slush prohibited states “

(1) As used in this section: (a) “Person” shall not include the state or a political subdivision of the state or an employee of the state or a political subdivision of the state operating within the scope of his duties. (b) “Safety vision” means an unobstructed line of sight enabling a driver to travel upon, enter, or exit a roadway in a safe manner.

(2) A person shall not remove, or cause to be removed, snow, ice, or slush onto or across a roadway or the shoulder of the roadway in a manner which obstructs the safety vision of the driver of a motor vehicle other than off-road vehicles.

(3) A person shall not deposit, or cause to be deposited, snow, ice, or slush onto or across a roadway or the shoulder of the roadway in a manner which obstructs the safety vision of the driver of a motor vehicle.

(4) A person shall not deposit, or cause to be deposited, snow, ice or slush on any roadway or highway.

I know it’s still a little early for winter safety but let’s prepare now before the snow shows up. May we all have a safe winter. Please thank a vet for their service. It will be appreciated.
