BUCHANAN — More than 110 volunteers turned out on an otherwise dreary day to donate over 350-volunteer hours and complete 12 service projects during Buchanan’s Make a Difference Day Saturday.

“Our church loves to host this event. It is great to work with other organizations to make an immediate impact in our community,” said Rob McPherson, pastor at First United Methodist Church.

A group at the church has been organizing the event for the last four years and has watched it grow exponentially from 20 volunteers the first year to well over 100 now. “The most satisfying part is seeing all the families and young people that come out to volunteer,” said Doris Higgins, church volunteer. “What a great way to instill the value of volunteering in future generations.”

Almost half of those volunteering were students.

Teachers, administrators and staff at Buchanan schools encouraged students to attend and many brought their parents. Also, a Girl Scout and Brownie Troop contributed to the efforts.

Projects completed included:

• Painting picnic tables and a pavilion

• Two park cleanups

• Garden cleanup at Moccasin Elementary

• A fall indoor and outdoor clean-up at Redbud Area Ministries

• More than 60 cards made for local service members

• Blankets for Hospice

• Visiting with residents at Buchanan Meadows

• Weeding and cleanup at Buchanan Library

• Fall cleanup at community green spaces

• Food drive

A variety of groups sponsored and organized projects, including the City of Buchanan, Buchanan Community Schools, Redbud Area Ministries, Buchanan Garden Club, P.L.A.Y. in Buchanan, Buchanan District Library and the Scarecrow Ladies.
