Area deal hunters looking for a large repository of second-hand goods and vendors looking for a large, visible venue to sell their goods may both find what they’re looking for at a Dowagiac business owner’s soon-to-open indoor flea market.

Steve Peterson will be opening a new resale and flea market on Tuesday, inside a 24,000 square-foot storefront located near the intersection of M-139 and Napier Avenue in Benton Harbor. The store, called Allthis2ndhand.com, will offer second-hand items acquired by the owner himself, as well as items sold by individuals renting space inside the facility.

Peterson, a former Ameriwood employee who moved back to the Dowagiac area in 2012 after living in California, spent the last six months trying to find a venue to house his new business venture, searching from South Bend to Kalamazoo for suitable buildings, he said. He finally found what he was looking for, in the form a former Big Lots retail store located near a busy Benton Harbor intersection, Peterson said.

“It seems like there’s a big pretty big opportunity to start a resale mall in the area,” Peterson said. “You can find a lot of little thrift stores around here, but I wanted to do something on a larger level.”

Peterson will occupy a chunk of the marketplace, where he will be selling items he has acquired over the years from storage locker auctions and liquidation sales, he said.

The remaining space will be available for rent by other vendors, who can sell whatever goods they would like, so long as they are in good condition and permitted for sale under Michigan law. People can rent space in 10 by 10, 10 by 20 and 10 by 30 feet lots, and will be responsible for supplying their own tables and shelving for displaying their items.

Peterson will collect 10 percent of each sale, with the money going toward advertising, credit card fees, maintenance and other costs, he said.

The Dowagiac man is hopeful that the new business will succeed, given the popularity of similar markets in Elkhart and other cities, he said. He hopes to acquire the vacant storefront next door in the near future, which would bring the market up to 65,000 square feet in size.

“Making the largest flea market in southwest Michigan is the goal I have in mind,” Peterson said.
