June 29, 1927 — April 30, 2015
Cora Loretta (Bonine) Carter, 87, formerly of Donnell Lake, passed away peacefully April 30, 2015, in Breese, Illinois.
She was born June 29, 1927, to Leslie and Ruth (Marvin) Bonine in Vandalia, Michigan. As a young girl she would try anything her older brother, Marvin “Chub” Bonine and Arthur “Mugs” Bonine would do.
She married George M. Carter April 5, 1946, in Cassopolis, Michigan. George and Cora lived in many different states, including Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Florida, but Michigan was always home. Her husband preceded her in death, as did her parents and her brothers.
Cora was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and aunt who took pride in her family and friends. She loved nature, playing Bingo, NASCAR races, and attending the Oshkosh Fly-Ins. Cora was an avid fisherman as well. She worked at several florist shops and was a postal clerk in Vandalia.
Cora will be greatly missed by family and friends. She is survived by her daughter and son in law, Catherine L. and Charles Deters of Mascoutah, Illinois; her son Craig J. Carter of Plainfield, Illinois; one granddaughter, Johanna C. Deters of Mascoutah, Illinois; and her nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will gather at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015, for a graveside service in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Cassopolis with Pastor Jeff Oliver officiating. Mrs. Carter’s remains will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband, George Carter.
The family prefers memorial contributions be made in Cora’s name either for the Bonine House and ground renovation in care of the Underground Railroad Society of Cass County (URSCC), Post Office Box 124, Vandalia, Michigan 49095, or, Breese Nursing Home, 1155 North First Street, Breese, Illinois 62230.
