For the second time, Paul Krause is the Niles City Golf Tournament champion.

Krause, 66, held off the young guns to pick up his second city championship at Plym Park Golf Course Saturday.

Krause shot 160 to best Mike Brown and Josh Townsley, who both finished two strokes back at 162.

Krause beat Brown, who played together again Sunday, in a playoff for his first championship five years ago.

“I won it five years ago when I was 61,” Krause said. “It was more the other people coming back to me, but I started to putt really well and that helped. I had a really good front nine. I shot 37. I started to slump in the back.

“Last time I won I beat Mike Brown in a playoff, so it was like a playoff again. The eighth hole that turn it over. I got a four and he got a six and that made the difference or we would have been tied.”

Vannessa Rudlaff captured the women’s city championship with a 211. Rose Prenkert was second with a 214 and Rhoda Phillips third with a 215.

There were a total of four women this year. Rudlaff said that her friends talked her into signing up for the tournament.

“I decided to take the challenge,” Rudlaff said. “It was really tough. I had to work for every shot. I don’t know why, but I felt like I was going to win a million dollars. The nerves got me. We were all pretty close. All four played really well.”

The men’s Senior Championship went to Tom Mollison, who finished with a two-day total of 173. He was 10 strokes better than runner-up Jim Crouch, who shot 183.

Dick Noble was third with a 188.

Mollison added the senior title to his men’s A and B flight titles.

“I was pretty confident coming into today after I was leading it,” Mollison said. “I did not play well yesterday, but I played well today. The course is in good shape and the playing conditions were great. The putting was tough though.”

In the men’s Super Senior division, Ed Meyer bested Frank Zavitz and Bob Freshley with two strokes as they tied for second with a 156.

Meyer is no stranger to winning at Plym Park. He was the 1972 Niles City Golf champion.

“I made par on the 14th hole to remain even on the back and I knew I had a pretty good chance. I did not play the last four holes very well. I got lucky because everyone else was struggling.”

The men’s A, B and C flight winners will appear in Wednesday’s Niles Daily Star.
