In the early hours of Tuesday morning, firefighters in Buchanan were called to the scene of a blaze that eventually led to the loss of a local family’s home.

Twelve hours later, various members of the community — including Buchanan’s popular spirit club, The Herd — had rallied to raise more than $2,000 for the family.

During a time so devastating for the family who just lost their home, it is truly inspiring to see the support and generosity of their friends and neighbors.

With fundraising sites like Go Fund Me developed to raise money causes of all varieties, it is not uncommon these days to see people contributing to efforts they feel worthy of their contributions, but for these young people to take time out of the day to go door to door downtown and ask for donations shows true character and commitment to community.

Buchanan’s Herd has been recognized for strong school spirit in the past, winning the title of the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s top student section in 2014. By donating their time and efforts to this family, they have demonstrated a level of commitment that surpasses school pride — showing they are just as dedicated to their community and the well-being of those they share it with.

We learn from those we surround ourselves with, and the kindness of these young people is a direct reflection of the parents, school officials and other community leaders who have taught them the value of giving to others.

We would like to thank the students leading these efforts, and the people all over the region who have contributed to this effort, not only for their financial assistance, but for reminding people everywhere what it means to be good neighbors and community leaders.
