Herbert R. Conrad, 81, of Cassopolis, died peacefully early Friday morning, May 29, 2015, in his residence, surrounded by those whom he loved and who loved him.
He was born Dec. 8, 1933 in Elkhart, Indiana to Fredis and Helen (Rader) Conrad. Since the age of three he had been raised by his mom and step-dad, Frank Fagan. He married Barbara Lou Berger Feb. 26, 1954, in Elkhart, Indiana. She survives. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Linda Rae Conrad; one grandson, Todd Conrad; four brothers, Roland Conrad, Richard Conrad, Melvin Conrad, and David Conrad.
Herb made good fudge. He enjoyed playing cards with his friends and family. He liked the Cubs, Colts, and the Fightin’ Irish. Herb was active in his church, Cass Bible Fellowship. He never quite got around to joining the Procrastinator’s Club.
Herbert will be greatly missed by family and friends. He is survived by his wife of over sixty one years, Barbara (Berger) Conrad of Cassopolis; two daughters and sons in law, Lou Anne and Dan Bates, and Kay and Jon Krager, all of Cassopolis; five grandchildren, Daniel (Shawna) Bates, Jr. of Constantine, Michigan, Toby Conrad of Cassopolis, Josh (Jera) Krager of Vandalia, Lisa (Robert) Engelhardt of Portage, Indiana, Elizabeth Krager of Cassopolis; seventeen great grandchildren; one foster sister, Shirley (Dan) Moore of Charlotte Hall, Maryland; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will gather Wednesday, June 3, 2015, from 4 to 8 p.m. in Connelly Chapel Wagner Family Funerals, 202 North Broadway Street, Cassopolis. Funeral services will be Thursday, June 4, 2015, at 11 a.m. in Penn Friends Church, 19107 Quaker Street, Cassopolis, with the Reverends Greg Compton and Richard Doran officiating. Mr. Conrad will be laid to rest near his daughter, Linda, in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Cassopolis.
The family prefers memorial contributions be made in Herbert’s name to Heartland Hospice Services, 8075 Creekside Drive, Suite 120, Portage, Michigan 49024.
