Niles honors senior athletes

Niles honored its seniors as its annual awards banquet held May 3 at Niles High School.
Along with the usual honors, Vikings’ Athletic Director Jeff Upton presented a special award to Kylee Myer.
“This year I have an award that doesn’t happen very often,” Upton said. “When an athlete spends their entire high school career on varsity teams. At Niles, the only other winner I am aware of was Maureen Craig.
“Mo challenged me to come up with a special award for her and now that we have that special award, I am happy to award it to my second 12-varsity award winner.”
Myer played varsity volleyball, basketball and softball as a freshman. She switched to cross country, basketball and softball for her final three years.
Adam Langmeyer and Hannah Walker took home the Joseph Whitwam Award, presented each year to the senior athletes exhibiting the best sportsmanship.
The Whitwam Award is voted on by the coaching staff.
Nominees for this year’s honor were Sean Craig, Rob Lundberg, Jalen Alexander, Alex Hardy and Langmeyer.
Langmeyer, who has a 3.96 GPA, played football and basketball for four years and ran track for two years. He will attempt Michigan State University where he will study actuarial science.
Also nominated for the girls award were Megan Kelley, Allison Grant, Megan McKeel, Myer and Walker.
Walker, who has a 4.15 GPA, ran two years of cross country and volleyball, as well as one year on the girls tennis team.
Walker will attend Michigan State University where she will major in dietetics.
The Ed Weede Award honors the most valuable senior athletes.
Myer, who has a GPA of 4.41, won the girls award, while Warren Smith, won the boys award.
Myer will attend Western Michigan University where she will study business.
Smith competed in football, wrestling, track and spent two years on the baseball team.
Smith finished seventh in Division 2 at this year’s state wrestling finals.
He will attend Albion College where he will continue his academic and athletic career playing football.
