Volunteer of the Week: Marv Pruett
Published 8:42 am Wednesday, March 18, 2015
Marv Pruett lives in Buchanan and does most of his volunteer work with the American Legion and Buchanan school district.
What do you do for the American Legion and the school?
I hold three different offices (at the American Legion). Any veteran that needs paperwork to go to the hospital — I do all that. I also run the Memorial Day Parade. I’ve been doing that for 28 years.
I do a lot of volunteer work at the schools too. I am a locksmith, so I do the locks there. I also help them fix up a lot of things. For the last five years I’ve run the scoreboard at the soccer games for both the boys and girls. I line the fields with the white lines. I did that for the Optimist Soccer last year, one in Niles out at Ballard and one in Buchanan.
Why is it important to volunteer?
The legion is very important because I served in Vietnam and I believe in the veterans and know they need any help they can get. There are a lot of them who have no way of getting to places, so I volunteer to take a couple back and forth to Battle Creek at the hospital.
For the schools, I went to the high school there. My son is the assistant principal at the high school. Before that he taught for 11 years. I keep trying to give back and help them any way I can.
What do you enjoy most about volunteering?
I just like being with people and doing things. It’s all about helping people out.
