A somber holiday this year

We would like to take this time to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday weekend.
Labor Day is the unofficial end of summer.
It provides us one last chance to soak up the warm, sunny weather before heading into the fall.
This holiday weekend, however, we should take the time to think about those less fortunate than ourselves.
The people who have been battered and left homeless by Hurricane Katrina should be in our thoughts and prayers.
There are those who have lost everything in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and Florida.
The pictures of refugees coming out of New Orleans leave us speechless.
How can this happen to the richest nation in the world?
Reporters keep talking about how this looks like a scene from a Third World country.
We cannot believe that with all the resources that we have available to us that these people continue to suffer five days later.
Help is on the way, but it has not nearly been fast enough.
This weekend there are benefits planned, both locally and nationally.
We hope you would take this time to give something to those who have been stricken by the hurricane.
All we ask is that you give what you can.
Locally, collections have already been taken and more are planned.
Saturday NewsCenter 16 will join forces with the American Red Cross in a Hurricane Relief Drive.
Chief Meteorologist Mike Hoffman will lead the NewsCenter 16 team and Red Cross volunteers by taking pledges from Michiana residents.
The broadcast begins at 8 a.m. (Michigan time).
Tonight the channels of NBC will be airing a benefit concert to help raise money. That begins at 8 p.m.
Race fans can also begin to show their support at tracks throughout the country.
The members of NASCAR will be donating funds and helping to raise money to help the victims of Katrina.
No matter how you get it done, please reflect on how fortunate you are this weekend and give something to help.
