Bucks advance; Chieftains eliminated at Lakeshore

STEVENSVILLE — Thanks to a stunning third quarter performance by Doug Freeman, the Buchanan boys basketball team advanced to the Class B District semifinals, while Dowagiac was eliminated by host Lakehore Monday night.
Freeman scored 18 of his game-high 35 points in the third quarter as the Bucks rallied to defeat Berrien Springs 58-52 in the first game of the doubleheader.
Lakeshore outscored Dowagiac 19-8 from the free throw line in edging the Chieftains 65-58.

Trailing 27-25 at the half, Buchanan (14-5) outscored Berrien Springs (10-11) 23-15 to take the lead behind the play of Freeman.
After scoring 14 of the Bucks’ 25 first half points, Freeman exploded for 18 points in the quarter and finished the night with 35.
Freeman hit 13-of-22 shots and 7-of-10 3-pointers. His night could have been even better as he was just 2-of-6 from the free throw line.
He was the only Buchanan player to reach double figures. Tyler Flynn returned to the line-up for the Bucks and finished with seven points.
Bo Taylor scored 16 for the Shamrocks, who led 14-12 after one and 27-25 at the intermission.
Buchanan takes on Coloma at 6 p.m. Wednesday night.

The perimeter shooting of the host Lancers was too much for Dowagiac in the nightcap.
Lakeshore (10-11) hit 10-of-19 3-pointers and held on for the victory over the Chieftains (11-10).
The Lancers also held a 35-29 advantage in rebounds, including a 22-rebound effort from Braden Burke, who also scored 16 points.
Dowagiac was just 8-of-29 from beyond the arc and hit just 8-of-17 free throws.
After trailing Dowagiac 17-15 after one quarter, the Lancers outscored the Chieftains 50-41 over the final three quarters to advance to Wednesday’s semifinal against Benton Harbor. Tip-off is set for approximately 8 p.m.
Beside Burke’s output, the Lancers also got 23 points from Jimmy Gathright and 10 points from Mitch Meyer.
Kyle Solloway capped his Dowagiac career with 30 points. Brandon Winchester-Jones finished with 15 and Davion Highsmith added 10.
